Ask A Menswear Blogger: It never rains in Southern California… but it does in the Bay

C. Benjamin

This is my first year living in SF (moved from MPLS) and I’m looking for your advice to get me through the rainy winter. I’m looking for a good, waterproof, “walk the dog” kit. Ideally, some footwear and coat options that i can easily slip on and off early in the morning and late at night that will keep me dry. I have some 1000 miles with rubber soles and a trench coat to wear to work, but would prefer something easier to get in and out of but still a refined casual.

Well first and foremost, congrats on escaping a state whose average temperature is below freezing for 25% of the year. I’m sure you will find the winters in the Bay to be damn near tropical in comparison. As you point out, though, you still need to be prepared for the rain. Let’s start with the footwear. While rubber soled 1000 Miles can certainly stand the rain, it’s not designed to be a waterproof boot. The  re-imagined Waxed Canvas 6″ Maine Hunting Boot by L.L. Bean Signature is perfect for keeping your feet dry without over insulating them.  As for outerwear, a classic rain slicker will do the trick. It’s hooded, so you can go without an umbrella if you wish, and versatile enough to be worn with jeans and a t-shirt or trousers and an oxford. Gant has the most classic of rain coats, aptly named The Rain Coat. It has raglan sleeves, which make it much easier to layer a sweater or sweatshirt underneath should you need a bit more insulation. If you know it’s going to rain a bit, I would also recommend staying away from denim or other heavy weight cottons as it takes a long time for them to dry. Lighter to medium weight chinos or  wool pants are going to be a bit better.

What'd you think of this?
