Ask a Menswear Blogger: Meeting attire
I’m going for a meeting with a company in NYC next week. Most likely the weather will be similar to how it is now “summer”. At first I was thinking of buying a nice suit, need one anyway, but it won’t be as serious as I thought for the first meeting. So I was thinking of something more casual/business. It’s NYC so maybe something I could wear that day casually around etc. Want a proper yet stylish look not super professional, that just isn’t me. Price wise I’d like to stay under $400 for everything although would like to get pieces I can use in other day to day activities.
Thanks
Since it sounds like business will be discussed in some capacity, I would recommend that you wear a blazer. Now it’s hot as balls in a lot of places right now, New York included, so it’s key to keep things light. Rather than wool suiting, try an unlined cotton blazer. The lack of lining and padding means that air is going to flow through the jacket better and give it a slightly more casual feel while at the same time looking professional.

While white and blue oxfords are ALWAYS a good choice, if you want to spice things up a bit this red check button down shirt will do just the trick. It’s poplin, which isn’t as hefty a weave as oxford cloth to provide breathability in warmer temps. If the red check is a bit much, as I said before, white and blue are always a good choice.

When it comes to the pants, keep it understated. Cool grey chinos are great because it’s a very safe color… that for some reason few guys wear. They are the definition of standing out while fitting in.

Loafers are the consummate business casual shoe. A good pair of loafers look just as good with trousers and a tie as they do with jeans and a polo. These loafers from Bass are classic, and this shade of brown helps keep that light feel to your outfit. Remember to leave your socks in the drawer.
