CB, I have a question. Is a sweater vest ever a good idea?
The short answer to this is, “Probably not.” This is very much a case of “What you think you look like,” vs. “What you actually look like.” Most guys that wear sweater vests fail because a.) the fit is off and b.) they don’t embrace the inherent nerdy prepiness that comes with wearing a sweater vest. You can’t make a sweater vest “edgy” and “urban”. It just doesn’t work that way. You have to fully commit to being dressed like a nerd and as a result for most guys a sweater vest is a bad idea unless they plan on leading a team to a championship (or to massive NCAA sanctions… which ever comes first). If you do want to take on the task of re-ushering in the Alex Vander Poole Era yourself, the best way to do it is with trim and classic sweater vest. The vest should hug your body. A simple lambswool and/or cable knit sweater vest is your best bet. Pair it with an oxford button down, a tweed or corduroy blazer, and some brogues. The pants are wide open: chinos, jeans, or flannel trousers will all work well. A tie is a good idea if you have a button down collar shirt and a must if your collar doesn’t button down.If you want to take it to the next level, a Fair Isle print is a good way to go. Again, the key is to embrace the collegiate nature of the piece. You will more than likely have people commenting on how much you look like a professor, but there are certainly worse things you can be called. Whatever you do, stay the hell away from argyle.
