Ask Megan: What do I pack?
Dan asked:
I’m traveling for a long weekend that’s going to be some business, some fun, and I need some help packing. According to weather reports, it’s going to be warmish during the day, but cooler at night (I’m going to San Francisco). I don’t need a suit, but I can’t look like a slob, either.
Well Dan, let me just say, this is right up my alley because I love packing. Lurrrve it. I think I was a puzzle no one assembled in a past life because being organized and put-together is one of my greatest joys in this one.
Layering is key, since the city seems perfectly comfortable to walk around in during the day and then becomes unreasonably chilly at night. Packing plenty of thin layers ensures you’ll be warm enough while toting a bag that’s still light.
What to pack:
• one pair of dark jeans
• one pair of khakis, cords or dress slacks (depending on how dressed up the business part of your weekend is)
• two light sweaters (cashmere if you’ve got ‘em)
• two dress shirts
• three t-shirts
• one hoodie
• one polo shirt
• lightweight-but-warm jacket (like a Harrington jacket)
• walk-around sneakers (like Chucks)
• casual boot (like a nice pair of chukkas)
• navy blazer
And don’t forget:
• your dopp kit (and whatever you put in it)
• sunglasses (because you don’t want to be that guy squinting the whole trip – or worse, decked out with an ill-fitting pair you picked up in the hotel gift shop)
• socks and underwear (because otherwise, y’know, gross)
Have fun! Send me a postcard.
