This time of year can be tough for those of us that get all four seasons. In addition to dwindling daylight and SAD, you have to deal with those awkward temperature swings. We have all been through it: at 7 am it is 48 degrees, by noon it should be about 75, and then at 5 it will drop down to about 57. On top of that, rain isn’t predicted… but your better judgement is telling you that it will at least drizzle at some point. Most guys will either overdress with an over the top, high tech outdoors jacket or underdress with no outwear whatsoever. Quilted outerwear is a classic and stylish answer to the fall/winter transitional conundrum. Here are some pieces that will keep you dry, warm, and looking fresh until winter rolls through in full force.
1. J. Crew Factory Quilted Vest - $69.50
Some days you just don’t need an entire jacket, and on those days a vest like this does the trick. The best part about thinner vests like this one from J. Crew is that they can be an outer layer over say a sweater or a denim jacket or a middle layer under a suit jacket or blazer. To pull off that sort of versatility the vest must fit close to the body.
2. Barbour Liddesdale Jacket- $149
When it comes to quilted outwear, it doesn’t get much more classic than the Barbour Liddesdale. This is the type of jacket that your dad will see and say, “I had one of those when I was your age. They are cool now?” The real story is, they never weren’t cool. For a slim, tailored look consider sizing down one (if you have long arms this maneuver won’t work). Don’t get too caught up on the sleeve length though. It can be cool to show a little shirt cuff.
3. Eddie Bauer1936 Skyliner Model Hunting Down Jacket- $269.55
Eddie Bauer has been in the outerwear game for a long time. Once relegated to realm of “Certified Dadwear”, they have shaken loose from the shackles of minivan keys and gone back to their rugged roots with their recent outwear offerings. This down-filled, quilted jacket is perfect for those living in places like Chicago where the wind off of Lake Michigan can turn that high of 55 into a high of 35 real quick.
4. Lavenham Ridgewall Quilted Over Shirt- $269.55
Lavenham, like Barbour, is a British company with a long history of outerwear and they have taken that experience and updated it with a modern fit and details that are on-trend without being over the top. Take this rounded collar jacket for example. It’s trim and features hip pockets and snap closure vents like the aforementioned Liddesdale, but the rounded collar gives it a slightly less traditional edge.
5. Polo Ralph Lauren Quilted Sport Coat- $395
This is one of those pieces that people will know you for. I know a lot of you are scratching your heads like, “What the hell? How do I even wear this?” Simple: you wear it just like a sport coat. On those days where its a little too chilly for your typical sport coat break out this bad boy. Don’t be afraid to turn up the collar, especially if it’s a bit gusty out. Worn over a wool or cashmere sweater with a button down and some chinos, it’s statement outerwear without being outlandish.
