Charlie Sheen sets Guinness record for fastest to 1 million Twitter followers
Charlie Sheen joined Twitter on March 1st.
It wasn’t clear whether or not his account would be a celebrity squatting or if the man with tiger blood would bring his WINNING attitude and fire breathing fists to social media.
But it didn’t really matter (although he eventually did), because people were following him, and following him fast.
So fast, in fact, that he set the Guinness record for “Fastest person ever to reach 1,000,000 followers.”
It took Sheen just 25 hours and 17 minutes to hit the milestone, per Guinness community manager Dan Barrett who said the agency “just researched and approved” the record Thursday morning.
How his account actually “happened” is kind of fascinating too. Obviously, anyone can sign up for Twitter. But if you’re a celeb, it’s a bit different, because of fake accounts and whatnot. Plus, someone was already “squatting” on @CharlieSheen.
As it turns out, per an interview in Adage with Ad.ly’s Arnie Gullov-Singh, the Sheenster got a little help from his friends in getting hooked up with the verified account (after all, Twitter doesn’t even verify accounts anymore).
[Sheen's "people"] told us he wanted to get on Twitter because he wants to have a direct conversation with his fans to tell his side of the story. So we got him the @charliesheen account, which was being squatted on.
As to the verification, Gullov-Singh pointed out that Twitter was simply being overwhelmed with requests for verification and didn’t have a “team in place” but they do make exceptions for certain people, like the “biggest name in media right now.”
The craziest thing about Sheen’s Twitter is that, thus far, he hasn’t been going off the deep end (or at least as far off as the world expected) and posting pictures of him sacrificing dolphins on an alter of heroin bricks or anything.
In fact, he’s been weirdly normal and entertaining and, well, WINNING.
