This past weekend I was able to check out the critically-acclaimed Drive featuring meme-tastic and fight-breaker-upper, Ryan Gosling. I’ll spare you what would be my obviously eloquent critique of the John Hughes-inspired cum suspense flick. Long story short – I thought it was pretty good. Go check it out. Take a girl. Even if she hates it, she’ll love you because you’ve enabled her to gawk at “The Gos” for 90 minutes.
One of the best things about the movie (and most appropriate to what I get paid the big bucks to show you guys) is Gosling’s style. It is the epitome of simple and proof that you don’t need to spend tons of money or wear crazy expensive pieces to look great. Throughout the movie, Gosling sticks to what I can only call his uniform. It’s very simple and straight-forward – dark denim, short sleeve henley, and a denim jacket. Depending on his level of badassery at that moment in the film, he may also have on his ridiculously awesome quilted baseball/varsity jacket with the embroidered scorpion on the back.
Apparently, Gosling was super inspired by Korean souvenir jackets from the 50′s. Since said jackets are hard to find, costume designer Erin Benach had it custom-made for the star. They went through sample after sample until they found the perfect one. So, unfortunately for film buffs and menswear nerds everywhere, the jacket is one of a kind. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get the same affect.
It doesn’t take Hollywood star power to pull off Gosling’s style from Drive, I promise you almost any dude can look great in these basics. Take a look at the outfit breakdown below and get your Drive on.If you want to learn more about what Benach had to go through to achieve Gosling’s look, check out the great article in GQ UK.

Asos Quilted Varsity Jacket ($91.48) – It may not have a scorpion on the back, but I can promise you will the only dude on the block with this kind of jacket. Varsity and quilted have usually been mutually exclusive, but not anymore. Jump on it.
Levi’s Slim Fit Trucker Jacket ($78) – Feel free to buy this jacket brand new and work it in yourself, Gosling’s was vintage in the movie, tailored to fit him perfectly. Honestly, save yourself $70 and go to your Salvation Army and pick one up.
J. Crew Short Sleeve Henley ($39.50) – Super versatile shirt that ups your t-shirt game. Wear it under your flannel this Fall or rock it on its own with a pair of crisp denim.
Levi’s 511 Skinny Jeans ($44) – I know skinny is a no-go for most us (that includes me), but I wanted to keep the set as authentic to the character as possible. Grab a pair of 501s or 514s if you can manage and you’ll still achieve the same look with less discomfort in your, uh, region.
Stacy Adams Men’s Madison Capt-Toe Boot (~$100) - I think these are last season’s boots, so they may be a bit hard to find. Benach noted they took sand blasters and various other tools to the boot to give it that beat up look. It also helped that Gosling smashed a dude’s head in. Just sayin’.
Leather Driving Gloves ($29.95) – Break these babies in to give them that perfect patina that only leather really gets. I bought a pair of these last week. I don’t even own a car. *shrugs*
Bulova Silver Dial Watch ($90) – Not the exact same watch Gosling has in the movie, but trust me when I tell you what he wore is ridiculously more expensive (it’s a Patek Philippe).
Persol Sunglasses ($310) – So, these aren’t the exact same ones he wore in the movie (the ones he did wear, according to Benach, were his own – and she didn’t even like them), but they’re damn close. Enjoy.
