The NSA, for those unfamiliar, is the National Security Administration. They’re America’s SIGINT (signals intelligence) branch. Ever wonder who’s reading your email, listening to your phone conversations, reading your text messages and looking through your photos online who aren’t just bored teenagers at the cell phone store? That would be the NSA. They also spy on America’s enemies.
Nonetheless, this creepy bunch of spooks does occasionally offer us something of value, like the computer, and now they’ve got the Android OS for the utterly paranoid. Or just people who need to guarantee their phone is safe.
This is the beauty of Android: you can do stuff like this, because it’s open source. What are the benefits?
- Every file and folder on your phone can be encrypted individually, as well as password-protected.
- App permissions have multiple levels of security; instead of blanket permissions, you can configure exactly how much each app gets to know and see what it wants.
- Connection security is enhanced as well, so no “brute force” attacks can be used on your phone.
And how does this sterlingly paranoid version of your phone’s operating system get installed? Well, first you have to download the original Android source code to your phone, and then download the SE Android source code on top of that. If you’ve got a Nexus S, this is a snap. If not, you’ll need an Android emulator. Oh, and you’ll need a computer that runs Linux. Yeah, it’s pretty complex. But the bragging rights alone will be worth it.
