A new restaurant inside a prison is open to the public
The Clink Cymru is a brand new restaurant from Chef Alberto Crisci that is set to open inside a Welsh prison. It’s a far more delicious version of The Longest Yard.
All the dishes will be cooked and served by criminals but Crisci insists it is “no gimmick”.
“We want to try and stand on our own two feet as a dining experience and be seen not as competition by other restaurants, but as a sort of recruitment agency so prisoners can go on to find work in quality establishment, develop pride and motivation and provide well for themselves and their families.”
If movies have taught me anything it’s that jail food is slop. Occasionally there are different colors, but for the most part it looks like it’s directly out of The Matrix. Plus nine times out of ten your lunch is being knocked on the floor anyways. Then again, there are only 4 prisons in Wales, so it’s entirely possible that they have a better setup than the fictional American movies that are the basis for my entire knowledge of the penal system. All jokes aside, this seems like a pretty smart idea. We always talk about trying to rehabilitate criminals, but most of them still go free with the limited education/skills that landed them in jail in the first place. Score one for the sheep shaggers.
Fun fact: Wales doesn’t have a single women’s prison. They ship all of their lady jailbirds over to England, so don’t expect to see Martha Stewart cooking your risotto in Wales anytime soon.
