Get old school with a varsity jacket this Spring
Varsity jackets have always been a badge of honor for young men. It was a symbol of athletic prowess, the ultimate test of adolescent manliness. Back when I was in high school, our varsity jackets created venerable gangs, a sort of West Side Story in the suburbs. We took our colors and our jackets seriously. Because of that, I’m conflicted with the recent explosion of varsity and baseball jackets in the men’s style world.
I’m not going to lie, I love the look of baseball jackets and the general style of varsity jackets. A lot of designers have taken the usually fuller cut jacket and slimmed it down, keeping in line with recent trends. But something about someone wearing an actual letter jacket without earning it feels fake to me. That’s just me. It also means I won’t grab a varsity or baseball-inspired jacket to help me transition from Spring to Summer. Check out some of my favorite pieces from around the interwebs and make your own decision. These jackets aren’t cheap, just like they weren’t when you were in high school (I paid $400+ for mine). Just remember how they made you feel. That feeling of power and excellence. Take hold of your youth and grab one this season. Who knows, maybe it’ll inspire you to hit the gym and see how many balls you can hit out of the park again.
