Gmail adds ‘send in background’ to maximize efficiency
Sending email is a real pain. Especially when you have to wait for the email to, you know, actually send.
Thankfully, Gmail’s come up with a solution to this: sending in the background.
Google’s email blog announced on Monday evening they’d found a solution for the problem of waiting for email to send, which, actually, is kind of a nightmare sometimes in Gmail.
We’re always looking for ways to make Gmail faster. One of the most common delays happens after you hit that “Send” button, when you’re waiting patiently for a couple seconds for Gmail to send your message. If you send a lot of email, that can add up to a lot of lost time.
The premise is pretty simple, really, and it’s even easier to turn on. (Much easier than trying to take a screenshot of the background send, which kind of hauls ass when it works … not so much when it doesn’t.)
Just cruise on into Labs — for the uninitiated, it’s in settings, which is that little gear looking function in the top right corner — and enable send in background.
When you send an email, you’ll be notified as it’s going out and you’re busy doing other stuff. And if it fails to send, you’ll get a big, read notice that said email didn’t go through.
While you’re there, do yourself a favor and get rid of all that time you saved by turning on “Undo” send. Basically, this gives you a 10-second window with which to cancel sending an email you already let fly.
If you’re the easily angered and/or hasty type, I promise this will come in handy.
