Seersucker has a bad rap in some communities and I can completely understand that. As a Midwest kid that went to college in the South, I thought the kids draped head to toe in brightly colored seersucker looked ridiculous. After a few years, however, I put aside my sartorial bigotry and tried on a pair of seersucker shorts and realized why they wear it: it is far and away the most breathable fabric out there. Don’t let regional prejudices keep you from staying cool and stylish this summer. The following are a four tips on how to pull off seersucker anywhere and look great doing it.

1. Start with shorts

Seersucker shorts are probably the easiest foray into the fabric. They are simple and while a prep staple can easily be styled many different ways. As with all shorts, they should hit between an inch and 3 inches above the knee depending on height and comfort. Blue stripes are classic, but something like a light grey or khaki is a good choice for someone wanting the benefits of the fabric without the judgement the look might bring.

2. Go Tonal

A lot of the fear of seersucker stems from the striped nature of the fabric, usually white alternating with another brighter color. If you lack the testicular fortitude to rock a little color brighter colors aren’t really your thing, try tonal seersucker. Tonal patterns are patterns that are in the same color family but the different elements vary by a tone (i.e. a blue stripe and a slightly darker blues stripe). Seersucker suits are excellent for summer weddings and a tonal seersucker suit isn’t nearly as obnoxious as your traditional blue seersucker might be.

3. Try a seersucker shirt

Seersucker is a fabric that can be  used a lot of different ways. In addition to shorts, pants, and suits, you can also find seersucker shirting. Seersucker shirts come in a variety of colors and patterns, but a simple white seersucker shirt will look great anywhere with a pair of tailored shorts and some loafers.

4. Don’t forget the small things

Still hesitant to dive in? That’s cool, you can still wade in the kiddie pool with some seersucker accessories. A neck tie is meant to add a little color to your daily kit, so try out a seersucker tie one summer work day.
