It’s official: your Xbox 360 will be replacing your cable box

Microsoft’s plan to have their console as the recipient of cable service is actually happening!

Its official: your Xbox 360 will be replacing your cable box

For whatever reason, despite the Xbox-as-cable concept seeming like an almost done deal, I assumed that it wouldn’t be the case. Cable companies have been so stubborn on so many fronts, and for so many years.

A rise in users cutting the cord already, opting for a combination of Netflix and Hulu as a TV replacement, might explain why Comcast and Verizon signed on the dotted line. They plan to offer cable television content via Live in the coming months. According to Bloomberg, via Destructoid, MS is also talking with HBO, Crackle (which sorta makes no sense, since that’s a Sony thing), Syfy, Bravo, and more.

So right off the bat, questions that come to mind: will Comcast and Verizon be offering everything they do already, but sans the box and via a console when the time comes? Hard to say, but in a perfect world, the answer would be yes, so I’m willing to wager no. The fact that MS is also talking to HBO and like is also confusing. If I want to watch Game of Thrones, will I be using a dedicated HBO app, like the Netflix or Hulu one, or will I be going though Comcast and Verizon?

It’s going to be a mess I predict, but it’s also going to be the start of something that many have wanted for a long time. So kudos for the those involved for making what everyone has wanted for such a long ass time. Of course, I wouldn’t be shocked to see it turn out to be an exorbitantly priced offering with a crippled programming line-up. And also watch everyone’s system go belly up from being on all the damn time. But still, progress.
