New ‘Mortal Kombat’ movie on the way, courtesy of the dude who made the web series

Did you enjoy Mortal Kombat: Legacy? If not, doesn’t matter, since you don’t run New Line Cinema.

Kevin Tancharoen is basically the latest great American success story. The dude was doing fine for himself, choreographing dance routines for Madonna and Britney Spears. Though what he really wanted to do was make movies, and he accomplished that with the crappy remake of Fame.

But what he really REALLY wanted to do was make movies that, instead of having anything to do with folks spinning and dancing, had folks jumping around and ripping each others’ heads off. He created a Mortal Kombat-inspired mini movie, as a proof of concept, to demonstrate what his idea for a new motion picture would be like.

Which eventually became a web series (both the original short and episode 1 of Legacy and be seen here for those who somehow missed them). And the president of New Line, Toby Emmerich, was so impressed that he wants Tancharoen to go ahead and do a new movie. Mission accomplished?

Certainly helps that the actual game had a reboot, and successful one at that, hence why doing another for the once lucrative film franchise makes perfect sense. Though as Joystiq points out, the rights are still tied up in a legal battle that is only going to get costlier since, again, MK is hot once again.

Apparently the new movies would have a more realistic take on things, so here’s something for something that’s exactly like the pilot. Meaning, more of Baraka being some deranged plastic surgeon and less of Baraka as some goofy super solider in a mystical realm that’s ruled by cheesy (and ultra cheapo) anime.
