Style tip: As the temp drops this fall, a solid wool tie is a great way to spice up an office look.

D.C. is known for many things in the US and abroad, but menswear is not one of the first that come to mind. Hugh and Crye is out to change that. The District shirtmakers are giving guys of different shapes and sizes great looking and more importantly great fitting shirts at affordable prices. I recently swung by their new space in Georgetown and they allowed me to take one of their shirts out for a test run.

Style tip: Double breasted blazers are back in a big way. The key is to keep them tailored close to the body.

One of the big things that sets Hugh and Crye apart from their competition in the “ready to wear” marketplace is their approach to fit. Rather than your typical “Small, Medium, Large” or neck and sleeve measurements, H&C uses a chart that is based on body type. Are you short with an average build? There’s a shirt for you. Are you tall and skinny, like myself? There is a shirt for you. There are 9 different sizing options for you to choose which works best for you. Most guys will be able to fit two sizes. I can appreciate this approach to fit. As a tall guy with rather wide shoulders and a narrow waist it can be hard to find a shirt that fits me well. I found the tall skinny fit me spot on.

Style tip: Pattern shirts are a must for going out after work. Ditch the tie and switch to dark jeans for a great happy hour/date look.

One conversation with the founder, Pranav Vora, will give you insight into the attention that he pays not only to the product but also the customer. The shirts are made of long strand Egyptian cotton, meaning they are soft on the skin but extremely durable. A great deal of attention was paid to the collar and it shows particularly in their cutaway collar. With an excellent roll and no collar gap, this is they type of shirt a grown-ass man should be wearing. All of the dress shirts come with convertible cuffs, meaning it can button like a traditional barrel cuffed shirt or be worn with cufflinks. With shirts ranging from $85-$105 in a host of colors and styles, you are hard pressed to find an off-the-rack shirt that will look this good and fit so well. They have a simple and generous return policy: if the shirt doesn’t work for you, send it back and they’ll make it right. If you are in the D.C. area, be sure to stop into their new space on O St. in Georgetown. Pranav and the gang will certainly take care of you and they have a great program where they’ll donate your ill-fitting shirts to Martha’s Table in exchange for 10% off your purchase. If you can’t make it to D.C. anytime soon, head over to their webstore.
