The Classical: A sports website Kickstarter worth kickstarting
“The Classical” is a new website that’s worth reading.
Well, actually it’s not a website yet. And so it’s impossible to read it as of right now.
But I bet when it is a website, it’ll be worth reading, and you should probably go on over to Kickstarter and donate to help fund it’s first year, because the world needs more good sportswriting.
How do I know this? Well, I “know” some of the folks involved. Internet and/or real friends involved include Lang Whitaker (of SLAM and Braves fandom fame), Bethlehem Shoals (Free Darko fame), Eric Freeman (Ball Don’t Lie/FD fame) and David Roth (Van Halen Wall Street Journal fame).
Yes, I’m namedropping. And I don’t care what you think or whether someone like Lang will say “Wait, who is that now?”
Because, though this — right here, right now — is the true great era of American sportswriting and because though there billions of blogs about balls in the world right now, this is a project you’ll want to read down the road.
The gentlemen involved are basing the site on the template established by The Awl, and seeking $50,000 in startup money to fund themselves for a year. (No, they’re not making that much money, obviously.)
Yeah, that’s a lot of coin. But you can donate as little as $1 or $5 — it’ll get you a sticker! — and as much as $10,000, which will result in Shoals coming to your house and reading the entire first season of “The Wire” in iambic pentameter.
In between that can land you some combination of the following:
A Twitter shout or postcard, a chip clip, a greeting card set, the exclusive e-book anthology, a T-shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, an essay on the subject of your choice, an essay on the subject of your choice, a FreeDarko print, a large box full of awesome stuff, a page from Jacob Weinstein’s sketchbook, and a day of our time.
So go give them some cash, even if it’s only $10. It’s a worthwhile cause, it will result in everyone discussing sports in a more esoteric fashion and it’ll help you kill off time a little more quickly while you’re at work.
I’d go donate $250 myself, but as it stands, my office is one tubed-up Free Darko print away from being served divorce papers as it is right now.
