Seiko 1 The Upgrade: Hello Mr. Nice Watch
With The Upgrade, the Guyism Style team helps you look good without looking like a victim of fashion.

Menswear is all about the details. You can have all the right pieces, but if the small things are off, the entire fit its off. One area that a lot of guys overlook is their watch. Watches say a lot about you. Wearing a sportwatch with a shirt and tie is as absurd as wearing sneakers with a tux. Buying that first “big boy” watch can be a little daunting for some. There are a lot of variables: size of the face, color of the face, tone of the metal, type of strap, “what the hell is a chronograph?”, etc. Unlike that asshole high school calculus teacher, we are going to spare you the lecture and give you the answer to this problem. Start off with a Seiko 5. Seiko is a Japanese company that started in 1881 and is known for making quality watches. They make a lot of styles and types at a wide range of price points, and our favorite is the Seiko 5 Automatic. Why? Well, for less than $100 bucks you can get a watch that looks good, is classic, and most importantly keeps good time. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a sportwatch; but honestly how often do you use a stopwatch anyway? It is automatic, meaning that it doesn’t have batteries. Instead the watch is wound by the natural movement of your wrist. Ever seen how an old man will shake his wrist just before he checks the time? He probably has an automatic watch on. If you go a couple of days without wearing it, the watch will eventually stop. A few shakes will bring it back to life. It has a slick crystal back; so you can see the gears turn when you wind it. The Seiko 5 comes in a lot of different styles and we like the SNK789K model. Not a metal band type of guy? Grab a watch tool kit and switch out the bands. Stay tuned for our picks for the best watch straps.
