A 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series ring sold for $89,000 at an auction in Ohio yesterday. The ring belonged to former NL rookie of the year Scott Williamson who served as a reliever on the squad. We’ve been told the prized possession is free of beer stains and chicken grease.

Fast food and boos aside, Williamson plans to use a majority of the funds for a indoor baseball facility for youth.

According to the item listing on the auctioneer website, “Williamson intends to use a significant portion of the proceeds from the sale of the ring to construct and administer a youth indoor/outdoor baseball academy. The academy would provide fields tailored to younger age groups featuring grass infields and pitching mounds with dimensions corresponding to youth rules. An inflatable bubble will allow year-round instruction unique to the Midwestern section of the country. The sale of the ring will be the start of a new direction for Scott and hopefully lead to a lifetime of continued involvement in the sport that has defined him to date.”
