The superhero movie genre, as a whole, is on the verge of exploring a brave new frontier as both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU are set to embrace the tried-and-true comic book concept known as the multiverse.
For the initiated, the multiverse is essentially the idea that there are an infinite amount of realities in addition to our own, each being different than the last. As it pertains to storytelling, the multiverse allows for multiple versions of characters. It sure looks like the upcoming Disney+ series is largely going to be centered around that very idea, as multiple Lokis raise hell across multiple universes.
2022’s The Flash will also find itself diving headfirst into the multiverse, as the film will not only feature multiple Batmans (I refuse to say Batmen), but one of those Caped Crusaders will be that of Michael Keaton’s, who is returning to the iconic cape and cowl for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns.
Andy Muschietti, the director of the film, recently teased Keaton’s return for the first time by posting a photo of the seminal yellow Batsymbol made famous by Keaton close to 30 years ago.
Keaton’s Batman isn’t the only Dark Knight set to feature in the film, as Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne will also appear in the film in what’s set to be the character’s DCEU swan song, marking the final time that Affleck will play the character, a role he first took on back in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Two Batmans and the titular Flash will also be joined by Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, who will be making both her DCEU and live-action big-screen debut.
The Flash is arguably the most important DCEU film since 2017’s Justice League, as it will effectively serve as a soft reboot of the franchise, effectively wiping the slate clean of the Snyderverse. That, combined with a whopping four superheroes in the mix make pulling The Flash off quite the task for It filmmaker Andy Muschietti.
At this time, The Flash is currently scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on November 4, 2022.
