63-year-old Bill “Spaceman” Lee signs with independent league
In 1979, 51-year-old Gordie Howe suited up for the Hartford Whalers, played all 80 games and scored 15 goals. It was one of the most impressive athletic feats of all-time for someone that age.
But former Red Sox pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee may be trying something even more fantastic. At 63-years-old, he signed a contract with the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League and plans to pitch in a few weeks.
Lee is a veteran of 14 big league seasons, the first 10 with Boston and the final four with Montreal. The southpaw went 119-90 with a 3.62 ERA in his career, playing his final game in the Majors at age 35 in 1982. Since then, he has remained active in baseball in semi-professional and senior leagues.
Sure, this very well may just be a gimmick to put butt in the seats. They wouldn’t be the first independent league to pull something like that.
Be that as it may, it’s still a 63-year-old man on the mound throwing heaters to kids who were born 4 decades before him. Wonder if he still throws that nasty junk ball? I also wonder if he still sprinkles marijuana on his pancakes.
