Above all, the Carrier Classic is a great tribute to the military

Regardless of the outcome tonight, the Carrier Classic has been a wild success. From the very beginning, the focus of the game has been to honor members of the military and to give them an opportunity to attend a game between two of the most storied programs in college basketball. An opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have under normal circumstances.

Tickets for the game were impossible to come by and frankly, that’s the way MSU athletic director Mark Hollis envisioned it. Numbers have varied but it appears at least 7,000 members of the military will be in attendance. One of those members will be none other than the Commander-in-chief himself, Barack Obama, who is a self-admitted basketball nut.

With the game coming on Veteran’s day, there may not be a more perfect way to honor those who sacrifice their lives for a freedom that I, and many others probably take for granted.

I speak for the entire Guyism team when I say, thank you for your service and as Elmer Davis once said, “this nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave”.
