Al Gore deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize?

Mother Teresa
Mikhail Gorbachev
Nelson Mandela
Mohamed Elbaradei

What do these people have in common? They are all past recipients of one of the most prestigious awards in the world.

The Nobel Peace Prize.

And while the Nobel Prize is at times controversial, it is almost always awarded to those who strive to make the world a more peaceful place(i.e.Gorbachev, Rabin, United Nations), or to those who make contributions to human rights/poverty (i.e. mother teresa, desmond tutu, Mandela).

Which brings us to the possible 2007 recipient of the award.

Al Gore

According to many sources, Al Gore is the favorite for Friday’s ceremony for his “climate change” campaign.

(Al Gore tipped to win Nobel)

Why?

Why does Al Gore deserve this award over someone like

Vietnamese Monk Thich Quang Do

Irena Sendler

Marti_Ahtisaari

The efforts of these people are tangible. Sendler alone saved 2500 children during the holocaust.

And Al Gore, well, he made a movie about global warming that may or not have an impact on our lives today.

Global warming, by most experts opinion is happening as we speak. Although most of us cannot actually feel or see a change, we yield to those who have more knowledge on the subject. Climatologists, researchers, teachers, etc…

Moreover, can a climatologist look at you and without hesitation say “Global warming is on the horizon”. Of course not, it is just a prognostication, or a very educated guess.

I have no problem giving credit where it’s due. Al Gore should receive praise for his tireless actions towards a cause he and many others believe in.

Give him an environmental award, give him a Goldman Prize, let the United Nations recognize his effort.

But the Nobel Peace Prize?

An award Gandhi himself did not receive even though his name is synonymous with peace.

Sorry Al, you just don’t deserve it.

What'd you think of this?
