VIDEO: Alex Morgan scores two goals…is worthy of your attention
Alex Morgan burst onto the scene during the 2011 Women’s World Cup as a reserve forward for the U.S. National team. Her ability to use her blazing speed against defenders was something coach Pia Sundhage desparately needed late in games.
But Alex Morgan’s goal is to start alongside superstar Abby Wambach before the 2012 Olympics. She made a strong case for herself last night with a 2 goal, 2 assist performance against Canada. A performance that was dominant from the very beginning as she outran the entire Canadian defense for a goal 5 minutes into the game.
She added her second early in the second with a fleet of foot move around the goalie.
Despite the dominant performance of the U.S. Women’s team in the qualifier (outscored opponents 38-0), Morgan has expressed her displeasure with the lack of support for the WPS. She recently had this to say to Goal.com:
I am a bit surprised, but again I don’t think this league has promoted itself to where people knew about it. Now that the league has struggled a bit to even survive, people have really turned their heads. It’s frustrating. You would think after the World Cup, you would want to continue watching those players. Here we are playing in your backyards asking for your support, begging for it and it doesn’t seem like we’re getting that.
These women definitely deserve more support but unfortunately, women’s soccer takes a back seat to many other sports in this country. Something Alex Morgan may be able to change—especially with performances like last night. It also helps that she’s mildly attractive.
