Athlete quotes over the years on homosexuality, gay marriage
How did athletes feel about homosexuality, gay marriage in years past? Well, the New York Daily News pulled quotes from several of them dating all the way back to 2002. Suffice to say, some of these guys probably regret making these comments.
“What’s next? Marrying an animal?” – John Smoltz, 2004.
“I don’t like gays. Write that down in your little notebook. I don’t like gays.” – Brock Lesnar, wrestler, 2004
“No, I mean, if I knew there was a gay guy on my college football team, I probably wouldn’t, you know, stand for it. … You know, I think, you know, they’re going to be in the shower with us and stuff, so I don’t think that’s gonna work. That’s not gonna work, you know?” – Jeremy Shockey, former Giants TE, 2002.
Good to know that Shockey’s worried about guys looking at his junk in the shower. Anyways, there’s more quotes in that NY Daily News link, including Tim Hardaway’s infamous gay rant in 2007.
However, it does not include what I believe to be the greatest quote on the issue. When asked to address internet rumors that he might be gay, Michael Vick answered, “Everybody who knows me knows how I get down”. Yes, Ron Mexico, the ladies are reminded fairly often of how you get down when they swallow their daily Valtrex.
