Auburn defeats Oregon for National Championship
The University of Auburn kicked a field goal as time expired to defeat Oregon in the BCS National Championship game. Leading 19-11 for much of the game, Oregon finally broke through the Auburn defense with just under 3 minutes remaining on a LaMichael James touchdown. The Ducks quickly followed that up with a 2-point conversion to tie the game.
But Auburn, which had one of the nation’s most prolific offenses during the season simply had too much time to work with. Cam Newton and company drove down the field and capped off with a very strange Michael Dyer 37-yard run that appeared to be dead.
Watch for yourself:
That propelled them into field goal range and after running the clock down to 3 seconds remaining, field goal kicker Wes Byrum came in and sealed the deal from 19-yards.
It is Auburn’s second national title and first in 53 years.
