Dwight Howard and Mama Kay 309x207 AUDIO: Dwight Howard talks about his biggest fan

We try to keep things relatively light here on Guyism. We realize that most of you have serious issues to deal with on an everyday basis–whether it be work, family, paying the bills, etc. So we do our best to distract you from those concerns, entertain you as best we can and perhaps even make you laugh once or twice when you visit.

A few months back I had a chance to chat with Dwight Howard for a few minutes at the Gatorade Replay event. Leading up to the interview, I wasn’t sure exactly what to ask him. The popular question for NBA players over the summer seemed to revolve around the Miami Heat and the “Big Three” and I definitely wanted to stay away from that. Moreover, if you’re ever seen or talked to Dwight Howard, you know he has a lot of personality and frankly, it seemed like a waste of question.

So I asked Dwight about a story I had seen in the Orlando Sentinel just a few weeks prior. A woman named Kay Kellogg, who was dying of cancer, had wanted to meet him as part of her “bucket list”. I was touched at how emotional Howard became when talking about her and how he genuinely seemed to enjoy her company.

Here’s an excerpt from that interview:

Unfortunately for Howard, the Orlando Magic and the Kellogg family, Kay passed away on Sunday from Multiple Myeloma. As a Hodgkin’s survivor myself for almost four years now, I’ve been lucky enough to meet some amazing people who have fought cancer to the bitter end. All of them seem to have that same quality Kay had when they knew their time was upon them; find joy in the small things of life and don’t waste another breath. Kay seems to have brought as much happiness to Dwight as he brought to her. Truly, a wonderful woman.

R.I.P. “Mama Kay”.
