Sports by the numbers: 2/24/11
Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
And just when you thought the 2011 NBA trade deadline couldn’t get any more chaotic, the Clippers sent point guard Baron Davis and draft picks to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon. If you want to see a guy mail it in for the rest of the season, then Cavs basketball should be must-see tv. Baron Davis will probably be ordering pizzas every night in an attempt to gain as much weight as physically possible.
The big question in the golf world lately is, when is Tiger going to win again? He’s played some inspired golf the last few weeks but has still been far from a victory. His latest performance in the Accenture Match Play however was anything but inspired. The #3 overall seed, Woods should have dominated Thomas Bjorn but instead lost to him in extra holes. It’s Woods’ second ouster from the event in the first round.
Unfortunately for the St. Louis Cardinals, Adam Wainwright’s season appears over before it even started. The 20-game winner and runner-up for the NL Cy Young last year hurt his elbow and may need Tommy John surgery to repair it. If so, he’ll need at least a full year to recuperate. Most around the organization, including Tony LaRussa seem pessimistic about the outcome. “It appears to not be good,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We’ll see, though.” Indeed Tony, a huge blow for the franchise.
The name Marshon Brooks probably isn’t on your radar but after last night’s performance, it will be now. The Providence guard scored 52 points in a loss to Notre Dame 93-92. The offensive explosion was a Big East record and ironically Brooks scored more points than the entire Depaul team did last night in a loss at St. John’s. Surprisingly, Brooks only shot 10 three-pointers the whole game as most of his shots were from inside the arc. Truly an awe inspiring performance.
