Bobby Bowden announced on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he had prostrate cancer in 2007. According to Bowden, he kept it quiet all these years for fear of negative recruiting from other schools.

“When you’re coaching, you’re looking for some kind of break for when you can get an advantage on the other guy. If word got out that Bobby Bowden had cancer, it’d have me dying on the headlines”

If you were naive to the sordid, behind the scenes tactics of college football recruiting, well, now you know. A man was diagnosed with cancer, albeit a very treatable form, and didn’t tell anyone, including his own family members because he didn’t want to hurt the program.
