Brandon Davies dismissed from BYU for having sex with his girlfriend
When Brandon Davies was dismissed from the BYU basketball team for honor code violations, everyone under the sun began to speculate which rule he broke. Did Davies have a piping hot cup of coffee from Starbucks, had he been found telling a lie, or was it something serious like alcohol or dare I say….SEX. Well, if you bet that Davies couldn’t keep his johnson in his pants, than congratulations, you win an all-expense paid trip to BYU’s inevitable drop in tournament seedings.
Sources confirmed yesterday that Brandon Davies had premarital sexual relations with his girlfriend–a virtual no-no under BYU’s strict Mormon regulations. Many in the media today are arguing in favor of Davies and ridiculing the rule, ignoring that Davies chose to go to BYU. The honor code is certainly not something new at the school, having been in place for as long as I can remember, so claiming ignorance of the rule itself is hogwash. In Davies defense, he has reportedly been remorseful about the entire incident, although, I’m sure he wasn’t exactly sad when the actual deed was going down (at least I hope not).
The loss of Davies to the team is catastrophic as he was their legit big man underneath. Teams have tried to double and sometimes triple team star guard Jimmer Fredette but that left several easy opportunities for Davies. He definitely made the most of it to the tune of 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
As news spread through campus yesterday, BYU had a home game with unranked New Mexico and needless to say, their minds were elsewhere. The Lobos came in and delivered an ass-whooping on the Cougars they won’t soon forget, virtually ending all talk of BYU’s #1 seed in the NCAA tourney.
One of the bigger questions out of this whole mess is, how did the school find out? Did somebody squeal on Davies? Part of the BYU honor code has to do with honesty, so I guess it’s possible that the school regularly asks those who have girlfriends to reveal their sexual history. Davies, instead of lying, came out and told the truth, maybe hoping for a lighter punishment. But my guess is that there is a Judas amongst Davies and his girlfriend’s group of friends. Someone who took the honor code entirely too seriously. And if that’s the case, I hope they’re happy standing atop their pedestal with their thirty pieces of silver.
