Brayan Pena wins game on dramatic home plate collision

One of the most epic pitching duels of the last decade ended with a dramatic play at home plate in the 14th inning. Here’s Tigers catcher Brayan Pena hanging on for dear life as Justin Smoak barrels into him.

The duel between Max Scherzer and Felix Hernandez was one for the ages, each matching the other with strikeout after strikeout. When it was all said and done, their numbers were identical—1 run over 8 innings with 12 strikeouts.

It was the 12th time in MLB history that two pitchers had done that and a decade since it last happened. Unfortunately, everyone on the East Coast was well into R.E.M. by the time this one ended.

Sad.

I blame whomever created time zones. Jesus? Ben Franklin? Science in general? I hate you all.
