Bruce Pearl has been let go by the University of Tennessee according to several sources close to the program. The firing is not really a surprise given the tumultuous season the basketball team has had. After Pearl admitted to recruiting violations, the SEC suspended him for the first 8 games of the conference season. However, the NCAA has still not completed their own investigation and the results may not come for a few days/weeks.

On Tuesday of last week, Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton had gone on a radio show and discussed the Pearl dilemma. His quote, “the jury is still out”, pretty much ended all speculation that the school was going to keep him on.

The situation was made worse, when, on Friday, Tennessee lost to the University of Michigan 75-45 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Several players after the game admitted that they had quit and even Pearl himself had said that the comments and the dark cloud hanging over his head were a distraction. The loss was the worst in the Bruce Pearl era at the school and the worst in the history of the 8/9 seeded game.

Who knows where Pearl will go from here but given his ongoing problem with the NCAA, don’t be surprised to see him in the studio for the 2012 season.
