Cal-Stanford play recreated by Kentucky high schools

Just this past weekend, I wondered about the value of kicking off deep or even squibbing a ball with less than five seconds remaining as opposed to just kicking the ball out of bounds and setting up a defense.

Sure, the Cal-Stanford lateral was a once in a generation type play that will never be duplicated and uh…..what’s that you say?

Video via The Legend of Cecilio Guante:

There is so much going on in this video that it’s tough to decipher if this was indeed a legal play. It appears there is at least one questionable fumble where the offensive player looks like his knee is down. There is also, at least in my estimation one very clear forward pass at mid-field.

Aside from that, the PA announcer seems to clearly state “..and that’s the ball game” at the :22 second mark which causes one team to rush the field.

Crazy stuff. On one hand it’s an amazing play and you have to certainly applaud the victors. But if you’re on the losing sideline, ouch, just a terrible way to lose.

What'd you think of this?
