Card game sparks fight on Grizzlies team plane
NBA players are not ones to shy away from fistacuffs during a card game. And if that card game takes place on the team plane, so be it. One of the most famous (and hilarious) incidents occurred when Detroit Pistons guard Jerry Stackhouse got into a disagreement with teammate Christian Laettner while playing poker. The hot-tempered Stackhouse gave the young Dukie a piece of his mind and his fist resulting in a brutal shiner Laettner sported for weeks.
And while nothing may ever top that story (yes, including the Gilbert Arenas gun incident), this Memphis Grizzlies tale between O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen is worthy to be heard.
From Yahoo Sports:
Mayo owed Allen money from a card game, “Boo-Ray” and sources said Mayo became increasingly belligerent and antagonistic toward Allen when asked to settle the debt. Sources said Allen walked away from Mayo to go the restroom and returned to find Mayo continuing to berate him. Eventually, Mayo inched close to Allen, and sources said Allen hit Mayo.
“Tony warned [Mayo] to watch his mouth, and [Mayo] wouldn’t do it and just kept going off on him,” a source with knowledge of the incident told Yahoo! Sports.
Color me shocked, O.J. Mayo was the instigator? He just doesn’t seem to have that kind of personality at all. If anything, I’d characterize him as modest and humble.
