So China finally got caught using underage gymnasts for the Olympics. And no, it wasn’t that 10 year old (pictured above) they conveniently trotted out in Beijing 2 years ago.
This one is from the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Dong Fangxiao, who was part of the Bronze winning team for the Chinese was only 14 when she competed.
Dong’s accreditation information for the Beijing Olympics, where she worked as a national technical official, listed her birthday as Jan. 23, 1986. That would have made her 14 in Sydney – too young to compete. Her birth date in the FIG database is listed as Jan. 20, 1983.
Dong’s blog also said she was born in the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac, which dates from Feb. 20, 1985, to Feb. 8, 1986.
I’m sorry, allow me a moment to recover from reading “Dong’s Blog”. See, that’s when I knew this whole thing was some kind of elaborate prank played on us by the Chinese. First of all, they aren’t even allowed to use the internet there. And secondly, there is no way “Dong’s blog” could pass by anybody’s work filter. In fact, part of me is completely frightened that I used 10 year old girl and “Dong’s Blog” in the same post. With my luck, Chris Hansen will be knocking down my door some time tonight.
