Dallas mayor did not approve Mike Vick’s key to the city
I know nothing of city politics, specifically the ins and outs of what the mayor and/or what the city council are responsible for. I do know, however, that when somebody receives a key to the city, it is usually with the expressed consent of the big man on campus—usually, the mayor.
Apparently in Dallas, that protocol is not followed. Before the Super Bowl last week, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick received a key to the city from councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway. Mayor Tom Leppert was in the dark and did not approve. He issued this statement on Monday.
The action taken was not sanctioned by my office and was not an official ceremonial honor on behalf of the City of Dallas. [This was] done without my knowledge or approval
Uh oh, somebody’s in trouble. To Caraway’s credit, he offered this retort.
Caraway said the gesture was more ceremonial than official, though those “keys” really don’t do anything anyway.
Wait, wait, wait, let me get this straight. Those massive keys to the city aren’t for some magical door revealing gold treasures? Dammit!
