David Stern tells Gilbert Arenas to shut his trap about gun incident
NBA commissioner David Stern is ready to welcome Gilbert Arenas back into the league with open arms. Provided he follow some conditions. Mainly, not ever speaking about last December’s gun incident with Jarvis Crittendon.
Free speech be damned!
“It’s time to move on, rather than obsess about the past,” Stern said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “It’s just that it’s been discussed, and discussed, and discussed. It’s been written about, and written about, and written about on each occasion – his release, his sentencing, my ruling or what have you – and at some point, it’s time to move on. I think he’s entitled to do that. And I’m supportive of him. We’re lucky he’s well and we like the way he’s worked with various groups over the summer. And we think it’s time. Millions and millions of dollars later, and a new season later, I think it’s time to move on. And that’s what I told him.”

I understand the need to move on from the incident, the need for the Wizards and the NBA to separate themselves as far away as they can from a public relations standpoint.
But unless Gilbert Arenas brings it up, it will always be the elephant in the room during any media session. Why not have a one-time sit down with a Washington Post reporter or a single statement from the team saying:
“Yes, Gilbert is a moron. He brought guns to practice and he threatened another player with them. It was stupid beyond words and nobody feels worse about the situation than Gilbert himself. He wants to move forward with his life and plans on being a model citizen”.
Simple as that.
