Derek Lowe charged with DUI

Things aren’t exactly going well for the Atlanta Braves these days. Just last weekend pitching coach Roger McDowell spouted off some gay slurs to fans. And now, last night, pitcher Derek Lowe was charged with a DUI. To make matters worse, it appears Lowe was drag racing while he was intoxicated. Wouldn’t you love to be the Braves PR team today?

The 37-year-old right-hander was charged with DUI, reckless driving and improper lane change, Wright said. Lowe declined to take a breath test before he was released, the spokesman added. The other driver also was stopped, but there were no immediate details on whether he was charged.

“Obviously we are concerned and disappointed about the events involving Derek Lowe overnight,” the team said in a statement. “We are currently gathering information and plan to address this matter later today.”

Technically, Lowe is due up in the rotation on Sunday but given these allegations, he might be out for awhile. This isn’t just a garden variety DUI. The fact that Lowe was drag racing adds to the recklessness of the situation. Stay tuned–this one could get uglier by the minute today.
