Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has been officially announced as NBA MVP. At 22 years old, Rose is the youngest recipient of the award edging out Wes Unseld who won it in 1969 at 23. The voting wasn’t as close as many had expected with Rose getting 113 out of a possible 121 first place votes. Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant rounded out the top 4.

His teammates and coaches offered their praise for the young guard.

Luol Deng:

“We all knew how good he could be,” Deng said. “It’s a big surprise for all of us for how quick he got there. We knew he would get there. But the way he works, he’s a humble kid and really out there just to win games. His talent takes over. But it’s his effort that stands out.”

Tom Thibodeau

“It says a lot about who he is,” Thibodeau said. “You can’t do it without believing you can do it. So obviously he did. It’s obvious to see his talent. But once you start looking at all the other attributes, the drive, humility and the way he cares about his teammates. That’s what makes him so special.”

Unfortunately for Rose, the Bulls surprisingly lost last night at home to the Hawks. He’s had some stellar performances in these playoffs thus far and he may have to turn it on again if the Bulls are to succeed. But another turned ankle yesterday may slow him down for Game 2. Although x-rays were negative, he’s listed as day-to-day. Then again, aren’t we all.
