Diana Nyad’s bid for a world record 103-mile swim fell short today due to unfavorable conditions. The 61-year old ended her attempt saying, “it’s hard because I felt like I had it in me”.

Her team posted the update on her Twitter feed early this morning.

Realizing the conditions of 5 to 10 knot winds and less than ideal currents, Diana herself decided to end the swim

Earlier in the evening, she was surrounded by dolphins and a beautiful Caribbean sunset. But strong currents blew her 15mph off course.

The combination of factors was too much to safely continue

“It felt like this was my moment. I don’t feel like a failure at all. But we needed a little more luck.”

Here’s some video of Nyad before she embarked on her journey Monday morning.

Truly inspiring stuff, especially when you consider how shark infested those waters between Florida and Cuba are. And if you’re feeling lazy because a 61-year old woman probably did more exercise in the last 24 hours than you’ve done all year, well then, join the club.

What'd you think of this?
