Serena Williams Twitter picture Did Serena Williams go too far with sexy Twitter pic?

Serena Williams must have known her sexy Twitter picture would cause controversy. After only hours of having it up as her avatar, it mysteriously disappeared from her profile, perhaps on the advice of her friends/agent. However, in this day and age of internet cache, it would be forever preserved.

It was only last week that a 40-year old man was arrested outside her Florida home for stalking. A man, who repeatedly tried to contact Williams over the course of several months.

So is it irresponsible for Williams to post such provocative pictures given this recent news? Greg Couch of Sporting News took a fairly strong opinion on the subject matter in his blog.

It’s a sexy photo, she looks great and it’s not pornographic. To be honest, I would actually find it to be somewhat artistic if it weren’t for the serious business of stalking women. What was her message anyway? What was she trying to say? Just this: Look at me.

Instead, what she was saying was this: Peep at me, but don’t stalk me.

Huh?

Having never stalked anyone in life, I can’t speak with personal knowledge as to what floats their boat, whether it be something like this lingerie pic or one of the many repeated bikini photos of Serena Williams on Miami beach. I do find the timing of the picture rather odd though, given the arrest. I would guess that most women might go into a shell after an incident like that, doing their best to stay away from showing off their body. But that’s the thing about Serena Williams, she’s not like most women and certainly not like most female athletes. She’s big, she’s strong, and she often flaunts her body with attire that legitimately shows off every curve a woman could possibly have.

So, in essence, instead of scolding Serena for a picture like this, I’m personally going to applaud her. In not so many words, she basically told her stalker, “screw you, I’m going to do/say/show what I want”. Indeed, whether you agree with her or not, it’s unquestionably a powerful message.
