Nick Gilbert 309x173 Did Timberwolves GM David Kahn accuse Stern of fixing the lottery?

The Cleveland Cavaliers were the winners of the NBA draft lottery last night, which was not exactly a surprise to Timberwolves GM David Kahn. At issue to Kahn was the feel good story of Dan Gilbert’s son, Nick, who suffers from neurofibromatosis and represented the organization at the lottery. Apparently to Kahn, it was too good to be true.

“This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines. Last year it was Abe Pollin’s widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy (Nick Gilbert, son of the Cavs owner) and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told (Jazz GM Kevin O’Connor): ‘We’re toast.’ This is not happening for us and I was right.”

This might be one of those times where you actually need to hear the quote instead of reading it. Aside from accusing the league of being corrupt, he’s unnecessarily taking a shot at a kid who has fought a terrible disease his entire life. Maybe I’m naive but I just can’t believe Kahn is that cold-hearted.

That said, the 1985 NBA draft was rigged by Stern. You’ll never convince me otherwise. The bent corner might as well be the man on the grassy knoll.

What'd you think of this?
