Egypt, U.S. soccer match officially canceled
The political turmoil in Egypt is now affecting sporting events. A friendly exhibition between the United States and Egypt that was to take place next week in Cairo was officially canceled today.
“We were excited about the opportunity to play against Egypt, but due to the current situation all parties agreed it was best to cancel the match,” U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said Monday. “We appreciate the efforts of the Egyptian Football Association and the U.S. State Department as we worked through this situation.”
This wasn’t a matter of if the game was canceled, it was a matter of when. If you’ve been paying attention to the news at all, flights in/out of Egypt are extremely hard to come by. In fact, unless you’re an American citizen or some rich Egyptian businessman, chances are, you’re going to be stuck there for awhile. And considering conditions have gotten worse as the days go on with rioting, looting, and overall debauchery, it’s not exactly the safest place to be.
On a side note, it’s a damn shame this game won’t be played. Both teams are near equals on the soccer pitch and it would have made for an interesting match in a year where friendlies usually lack a competitive nature.
