Ernie Harwell’s statue vandalized by Detroit scum
The statue of legendary baseball broadcaster Ernie Harwell has been vandalized at Comerica Park. In July, Detroit Tigers officials noticed that the bronze glasses perched on Harwell’s face had been stolen. Although, the organization is quick to point out that it was likely “a fan”, I’m more than willing to go ahead and call them scum.
“We’re going to attach them as strongly as possible,” says Omri Amrany of the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany in Fort Sheridan, Ill., “but if somebody has a crowbar and a little persuasion, you cannot keep the glasses on anybody. Anything that can break a car can break a statue.”
…It’s unclear how someone could clamber onto the pedestal just inside the main entrance and wrench the glasses free without being noticed. Then again, nearly 2.4 million people have caught a ballgame this championship season at Comerica, and you can’t watch them all every minute.
Whatever the reason for the theft, whether it be for scrap metal or simply for memorabilia, it’s a damn shame. Harwell was not only a sports legend, but a philanthropist, a man of the community, and above all, a great representative for the city of Detroit.
This is a person who donated $4 million worth of baseball cards, artifacts, and letters to the Detroit Public Library out of the goodness of his heart.
I’m disgusted not only as a native Detroiter, but also as a human being. Now, if you’ll excuse, I’m going to throw up.
