Escort SmartCord: helping you avoid speeding tickets with social media

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

There’s nothing like rushing to work because you’re late, hitting a speed trap, getting pulled over and then showing up an hour late with a boss ready to kill you. It’s almost as fun as being a peaceful protester around the Oakland police. And now, of course, like everything else…there’s an app for that. Of course, you’ll need to buy a couple of gizmos to go with it, but it might be the best cop-dodger on the market. Meet the Escort SmartCord.

OK, note to everybody making these kids of videos: we understand the appeal of the crappy background techno loop, because it means you don’t have to think about music, but seriously. It sucks.

Anyway, this is actually a pretty smart way of doing things, as it creates a complete network of people constantly updating the locations of speed traps and hidden radar guns, although we kind of question the value of tracking red light cameras. Isn’t running a red light a bit, oh, colossally stupid? Doesn’t having one of those qualify as a good thing? Still, it gives you a map of all the ways the Man is trying to make you drive 55, and that map is shifted as the cops change it up. And, naturally, they made a social network out of it; you can get good karma for reporting radar traps.

Which makes us wonder, will there be people who start just driving around, looking for radar traps, to boost their karma? Have you been to Reddit, Escort? Karma is not the greatest idea. Also, we’re not sure how many people will actually shell out for this complete kit, but it is at least a neat idea.
