ESPN fires Hank Williams, Jr. over Obama-Hitler comments
Hank Williams, Jr. has been let go by ESPN for controversial comments he made about President Barack Obama.
Here’s their official statement (via SI’s Richard Deitsch):
“We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue.”
Williams did issue an apology shortly after ESPN pulled his Monday Night song but it appears the Worldwide Leader had already made up their mind…or had they? According to the Hank Williams, Jr. website, he was the one that pulled the song.
After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision. By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment
Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run
There’s no time stamp on either ESPN or Williams’ post so we’re not sure what came first–the chicken or the egg. But given Williams’ apology just two short days ago, we’ll just go ahead and assume he was canned.
