Graeme McDowell 278x214 Europe wins 2010 Ryder Cup

Despite a valiant effort from Team USA, the Europeans eked out a one point victory to win the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Heading into today, the U.S. was trailing 9.5-6.5 and needed a comeback similar to Brookline in 1999 to have any chance. And that’s exactly what they got. Early victories from Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson paced the way as the U.S. stormed back to within a point. When Ryder Cup veterans Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson blew away their competition, it was left to rookie Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan to bring the Cup back home. Fowler did his part making four birdies in a row in one of the most incredible halves in recent Ryder Cup memory.

And then it was Hunter Mahan’s turn.

Facing U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, Mahan tried to climb his way back after trailing the entire match. But McDowell simply wouldn’t let him. Down two with two holes left, Mahan left his 17th tee shot short of the green. Essentially needing a chip-in to win the hole with McDowell in position to make par, Mahan chunked it. Arguably the worst shot of his life given the circumstances.

The rest, as they say, is history. After all, they have “Little Mac” and us fat Americans have “Big Mac”.
