I won’t try to hide my rooting interests nor give a prediction that doesn’t reek of homer-ism. If MSU was completely healthy, I have no doubt they would be the favorite to win this Final Four. But even amidst losing their star point guard and having a banged up starting five, I still believe they are going to win it all. People seem to forget that this team went to the National Championship last year and was a pre-season top 5 team. But Tom Izzo doesn’t play for regular season games so there were times when they struggled. He benched players and he sent messages. Messages that took some players months to figure out. Thus, they ended up a 5 seed and maybe the scariest 5 seed in tourney history.

You now see the rewards of Izzo’s discipline on guard Durrell Summers. It was just three weeks ago that Summers was riding the end of the bench in the Big Ten Tournament. And now, he may very well be playing himself into the NBA draft.

Their opponent Butler has had a magical season and they’ll get to play in front of their home fans. But give Tom Izzo a week to prepare against a Horizon League team and I can’t say in good faith I give them a good chance.

MSU 70
Butler 55

Joe Mazzulla had a breakout game against Kentucky but duplicating it may be his toughest challenge. And a challenge I don’t see him accomplishing. While normally a Duke hater, I have come to actually appreciate the toughness on this team. The rebounding and the defense are things that have escaped Coach K’s team in recent years.

Duke 62
WVU 59
