Gaffe by Joe Gibbs leads to Redskins loss
Here in Detroit, we are all too familiar with coaching blunders. Deep in the recesses of my brain, I still have flashes of Bobby Ross going for two late in the 4th quarter when an extra point would cut the lead to 3.
I can still hear Marty Mohrinweg defending his decision to take the wind against Chicago in overtime.
Those were by people who probably had no business coaching in the NFL.
But Joe Gibbs?
Nah, not Joe Gibbs. The guy is a Hall of Famer and has three superbowl rings to his credit. He is immune to such stupidity.
Or maybe not.
In a game where emotions were high because of the loss of Sean Taylor, Gibbs just plain forgot the rules.
Down 16-14 with 4 seconds left, Buffalo lined up for a 51 yard FG. Gibbs called one timeout to freeze kicker Ryan Lindell. But as Lindell lined up the second time, Gibbs asked a referee if he was allowed to call another one. He thought the official said yes, but after calling the timeout, Washington was hit with a 15 yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. Lindell then made the much easier 36 yarder.
Coaching 101-Know the Rules
Calling back to back timeouts is a penalty. Its been that way for awhile Joe.
Maybe the game has passed Gibbs by. Since coming back in 2004 his record is a paltry 26-34. A far cry from his previous tenure with the Skins when he only had one losing season in 12 years.
The loss was crushing to the Redskins who were not only looking for a win for their fallen teammate but a win to keep them in the playoff hunt.
Disastrous on both counts. Say it Aint so Joe
