Golden Gopher mascot, Goldy, punched in the face at gymnastics meet
This must be the year for mascot-fan fights. Just a few weeks ago, the Utah Jazz mascot got into a heated altercation with a Cleveland Cavaliers fan.
And now it appears, Goldy, the adorable Golden Gophers mascot, was the victim of fan on mascot violence. To make matters worse (or hilarious depending on your perspective), the assailant was a 60-year old man.
During the meet, the University of Minnesota mascot sat behind Douglas Dokken, 60, and started “messing with him,” witness Barry Colthorpe said. Goldy tapped Dokken on the shoulder and ruffled his hair.
Colthorpe said Dokken was ignoring Goldy’s antics, but within a couple of minutes, he snapped, turned around and punched Goldy in the face.
Goldy froze, but within moments of the first punch, Dokken wailed another, forcing Goldy to leave the area.
You really have to give Goldy credit for his restraint here. I mean, it’s bad enough he’s working a men’s gymnastics meet–that makes him the low man on the mascot totem pole. But getting punched by a geezer so hard that he rearranged his mask? Ouch.
As far as old man Dokken is concerned, you’re lucky you weren’t charged with a hate crime buddy. Where I come from, violence against furries are a no-no.
