Gophers star forward Trevor Mbakwe violates restraining order on Facebook
The hits just keep on coming for the Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball program. Less than a week after point guard Devoe Joseph was suspended from the team for unidentified reasons (and subsequently asked for a transfer), star forward Trevor Mbakwe was arrested last night for violating a restraining order.
And, not to make light of the situation or anything, but he violated it in the most interesting way possible–on Facebook. Mbakwe’s message according to fan site gopherhole.com, “hope all is well with you” on an ex-girlfriend’s wall.
Hey, if you’re going to get a misdemeanor, you might as well go about it nicely.
“We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Trevor,” said Minnesota Athletic Director Joel Maturi. “Until we know all of the facts surrounding the charges it would be premature for us to have any further comment.”
Mbakwe will almost surely serve a suspension of some sort but I can’t imagine if there is any precedent for this kind of thing. Call me naive or just plain stupid but I was under the impression that you had to actually be within a certain distance to violate a restraining order. I wasn’t aware that distance could be measured digitally.
